Janmashtami – Birth of Lord Krishna 2021

Janmashtami, celebrates the birth (janma) of the Lord Krishna , the eighth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, on the eighth (ashtami) day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September). This year, it will be celebrated on the 30th of August. Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, ruled by the evil King Kansa, whose sister, Princess Devaki was Krishna’s birth mother. Devaki and Vasudeva were married with a lot of fanfare, however, a prophecy said that the couple’s eighth son would cause Kansa’s downfall.

As expected, when Kansa heard of this, he imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva instantly. The evil king got their first seven children killed. When the couple’s eighth child, baby Krishna, was born in prison, Vasudeva managed to rescue the baby and send him to Nand Baba and Yashodha in Vrindavan.

Lord Krishna was born for a special purpose on earth that is to free the world from evil. He was able to kill Kansa. He was the most powerful reincarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Hindus perform different rituals on this joyous festival to please Lord Krishna. The occasion is observed especially in Mathura and Vrindavan, which are the places of his childhood and early youth. On the preceding day, devotees keep a vigil and fast until midnight, the traditional hour of his birth. Then the idol of Krishna is bathed in water and milk, dressed in new clothes and worshipped. Temples and household shrines are decorated with leaves and flowers and offerings are made to him.
In Maharashtra, Janmashtami witnesses the exuberant enactment of Krishna’s childhood endeavours to steal butter and curd from earthen pots beyond his reach. A matka or pot containing these is suspended high above the ground and groups of young men and children form human pyramids to try and reach the pot and eventually break it.
The festival is a time for group singing and dancing. This information was shared with the students, the students celebrated the day with joy and enthusiasm and sent pictures and videos.
