India hails to the strength of Indian Navyon December 4, which is marked as the National Navy Day.Having proved its valour on several occasions Indian Navy celebrates its strength on this day and remembers the brave hearts and honours them.
In 1971, December 4 was the day when Indian Navy sank four Pakistan vessels including PNS Khaibar during its Operation Trident in the Indo-Pak war. Operation Trident holds important significance because that was the first time India used an anti-ship missile in combat in the region. The operation was conducted at Karachi border which was the headquarters of the Pakistan Navy causing heavy damage to the Pakistan army. There were no casualties reported from the Indian side making Operation Trident one of the most successful operations conducted by Indian Navy, therefore celebrated as National Navy Day every year. On this day, those who martyred in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 are also remembered.
Various events take place during Navy Week with the finale on Navy Day. On this day the warships and aircraft of the Indian Navy are open to visitors such as school children. There is a veteran sailors’ lunch, performances by the Naval Symphonic Orchestra , an Indian Navy Inter School Quiz Competition,a Navy Half Marathon as well as an air display for school children and the beating retreat attracts the attention of everyone..
